Project Overview
Aurelios - the Lost City - is an underwater metropolis built into a 609×609 environment on Minecraft Java 1.12.2. The project treats the seabed itself as a designed landscape: sculpted ridges, aquatic vegetation, and architectural clearings all composed together so the ruins read as a living lost civilization rather than props on flat ground.
Underwater Terrain as a Designed Environment
The seabed is fully custom. Ridges, cliffs, sand shelves, and dense aquatic vegetation create depth-of-field and reinforce the composition of the architecture above them. Terrain-only views were treated as their own compositions - the environment is meant to hold up whether or not any single building is in frame.
Classical Architecture, Sunken
The city combines grand colonnades, sunken plazas, and mysterious partial ruins with a restrained material palette. Every major structure is built out on the interior as well as the exterior - detailed chambers and sunken halls throughout, so exploring inside the city is as rewarding as viewing it from the water column.
Atmosphere and Composition
The overall palette leans into blue-green cast, filtered light, and layered silhouettes to sell the underwater atmosphere without over-relying on shaders. Aurelios is intended to read as a real place that used to be inhabited, now claimed by the ocean.
Custom terrain or environment build?
Aurelios is one example of how terrain and architecture can be designed together as a single environment.
